How to clean a intercooler?

- May 09, 2018-

An air-cooled intercooler is fitted with radiator radiator installed in front of the engine, the cooling of the ventilation fan and the driving surface wind of the car will lead to insufficient engine power and fuel consumption.

Therefore, it should be checked and maintained on a regular basis. The main contents are:

external cleaning:

Because the middle cooler is installed in the front, the heat sink of the cooler is often blocked by leaves, oil sludge (the hydraulic oil that flows into the oil tank), so that the heat dissipation of the cooler is blocked. Therefore the site should be cleaned regularly

The method of cleaning is to use a water gun with less pressure to vertical to the plane of the cooler,Slowly wash down from top to bottom or from bottom to bottom, but never slant to prevent damage to the cooler.

Internal cleaning and inspection.

The internal tube of the cooler is often accompanied by dirt, glue and other dirty things. It not only Narrows the air circulation channel, but also reduces the cooling heat exchange capacity. Therefore, maintenance and cleaning must also be carried out.

In general, each year or engine overhaul, welding water tank, should be cleaned and checked inside the cooler.

Cleaning method: the aqueous solution containing 2% soda ash (temperature should be in 70-80 ℃) to join inter-cooled apparatus, filled with, wait for 15 minutes, see inter-cooled presence of seepage

If it is to be removed and inspected, welding (same as repairing water tank); If there is no leakage, shake before and after, repeat several times, pour out the lotion, and then fill in the clean water solution containing 2% soda, until relatively clean.

Refill again clean clean hot water (80-90 ℃), until the release of clean water

If there is oil on the outside of the cooler, it can also be washed with alkaline water. The method is to soak the oil in the lye and remove it with a brush until it is clean.

After cleaning, use compressed air to blow dry the water in cold or dry naturally or when installing a cold device won't pick up cold and engine connecting pipe, starter motor, stay cold trap, the outlet without water and connected to the engine intake pipe.

If there is serious viscous contamination in the core of the cooler, it is necessary to carefully check the holes in the air filter and the inlet pipe and troubleshoot

The biggest problem with turbochargers is that the intake of fresh air is very close to the high temperature exhaust, and the fresh air that is sucked in is compressed and the temperature is much higher.

So even a supercharged engine that does not have a high exhaust temperature has to be cooled by a medium cooler.

The air is compressed and the temperature goes up. The simplest example is an air pump that inflates a tyre.

If you don't believe please touch the inflatable pump and you will know how horrible the heat is stored in the air.

And we know from chemistry and physics that the lower the temperature, the higher the oxygen content in the air.One might ask: what does this have to do with it?

As you know, fuel combustion requires oxygen in the air, and the more oxygen you have, the more fuel you burn, the more power you have.

The cooler is an efficient radiator that cools the fresh air before it enters the engine. You can imagine, inter-cooled device is located in the cooling water tank before, so it can be directly impacted by the cold air blowing straight, but also in air filter, the back of the turbocharger or a supercharger

It is true that most cars are equipped with a cooler in front of the radiator, and that the cooling effect is better than that of some of the top - mounted coolers.

However, this will affect the air flow of the cooling water tank, so in some limiting cases, such as the circuit, the radiator tank must be upgraded to control the engine temperature.
